Alex from Tokyo

Paris born, Tokyo raised, NYC based international eclectic French DJ, producer, sound designer and international coordinator.

Having lived in Tokyo more than 20 years, Alex from Tokyo has developed into one of the strongest crossover DJ's in Tokyo. He is a key person connecting the electronic scene and Japan as F Communications Japan representative, Mr.Bongo/Disorient Japan, and Yellow Productions/Bossa Tres Jazz project coordinator.

Now based in New York from 2005, Alex has been playing regularly in Japan, Asia, New York and Europe. Alex still travels back to Tokyo every 3 months to continue his 16th year residency at the Sunday afternoon party "Gallery", his Timewarp party and tour throughout Japan. In New York he regularly plays at Cielo, Le Bain, The Panther Room (Output), Santos Party House and Nublu.

Alex has been also active producing music under the name Tokyo Black Star with his partner Isao Kumano, releasing original material on the Berlin based label Innervision, the joint label Reincarnation by Italian tastemakers Slam Jam, and DJ Deep's deeply rooted house music record label. Tokyo Black Star have done remixes for labels such as Flower Records, Yellow Productions, Frikyiwa, Bassmental, Disorient. Recent remixes include Kuniyuki’s “Birds” (Mule Musiq), Nublu Orchestra’s :Sketches of NY,” Bing Ji Ling’s “Home” (Lovemonk), Master H and Greg Oreck’s “Coffee is Ecstasy” (Komplex de Deep), Arno E Matthieu’s “Heritage” (Clima Records), and Filipson + Lindblad’s “Reflections” (Mood Music). Tokyo Black Star collaborated in the summer of 2008 on the German Great Stuff's label “Summer Games” Olympic compilation with the track “Japan.”

Besides the club scene, Alex from Tokyo has been musically collaborating, consulting, and producing for brands like Y-3 and Louis Vuitton. He has been invited to play at the official party of the world famous art fair ART BASEL in June 2007, and in September 2006 saw the Japanese release of Laurent Garnier's book “Electrochoc” in which Alex translated from French to Japanese. In February 2009, Reincarnation released the official label mix CD “DJ Alex from Tokyo Presents ‘Reincarnation’ -the Flashback Mix-.”

Tokyo Black Star released in April 2009 their first long-awaited Tokyo Black Star debut album “Black Ships” on Innervisions, and they toured live and DJ in the Fall 2009 in Europe and Asia. Alex started also in Spring 2010 in Japan with Isao Kumano a new "revolutionary" audio brand called phonon (www.phonon-inc.com) representation the brand outside Japan.

Tokyo Black Star remixed Wagon Cookin’s “Come into the Light” (OM Records) and Mezza Luna vs Felix Cage’s “Blizzard” (Electronical Reeds) in January 2011. Tokyo Black Star released the EP “Slam Jam” on Reincarnation in September 2011, and they remixed Carl Craig's Psyche masterpiece “Neurotic Behavior” for the 20th anniversary of the Planet E label. Tokyo Black Star's latest release "Together EP" in response to the 311 disaster in Japan on the Japanese label Tokyo House Underground/New World came out digitally in April 2012.

In 2013, Tokyo Black Star’s latest remix of Phenomenal Handclap Band’s “The Right One” for the “PHB loves NYC” remix album came out in May on Tummy Touch Records. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fashion brand Y-3, Y-3 collaborated with Alex on a limited edition compilation with 14 innovative electronic music producers, with CD and vinyl sets specially packaged with artwork by PL Studio (www.Y-3.com/music). Alex from Tokyo was also the selector of the great CD series "Originals vol.10" on the London label Claremont 56 which came out in September.

Alex is currently re-launching from NYC his own label "world famous" for fall 2014.
